[His hair's slicked back, too, and he's loosening a little bow tie with his other hand. Tugging at it with a little more force than strictly necessary.]

Exactly, um. Does anyone have any tips for how to... like, not go broke? How do people keep track of money? How do you not run out?

I plead lack of maturity, lack of understanding of the value of a... whatever the unit of currency is here, I don't even know.

And yeah, okay, if you all want a good laugh at my expense, my foster father is a billionaire, both through inheritance and being the CEO of a worldwide corporation. Go ahead, I've heard all the rich kid jokes and I don't really care, I'd just be grateful, in return, for a little--

[There's a voice yelling in the distance, something about not being paid to take breaks; Dick jumps up and shuts off the feed immediately. He does have a work ethic, okay, he was a circus performer until he was nine, but that money was all put in the bank.]

You know, back on the money topic, someone could make a lot of money if they were willing to compensate for the spectacle. Also known as exploiting, but reality TV's never exactly been real. That should go double for in a video game...

...Do they even have reality TV here? I haven't even heard of any of those shows with clips of people getting amusingly attacked by animals.

They actually might find that boring. Getting attacked by animals? That's Tuesday for people here.

And they wouldn'T find people attacking animals funny either, so what would they show?

Pokemon celebrities going about their daily lives, probably. Or talent pageants. Pokemon Idol? Who's got the best Sing attack, the best Flamethrower...

...Can you imagine the kind of studio they'd need to film that? It would have to be everything-proof, and take measures against the crowds suing them for accidental injuries.

You know, that just raises more questions. Say you're a, I don't know, an Oddish farmer, and your neighbor has a herd of Ponyta.

I bet the Oddish would get knocked out all the time and never have a chance to get experience. Can you sue for damages as a result of developmental delay?

Maybe, if your Oddishes were there first. If you moved your Oddish farm next to a preexisting herd of Ponytas you'd probably get laughed out of court.

That is an excellent point.

And considering that gyms are "themed," type-wise, it stands to reason that type is pretty popular in that town, if you have a lot of people who want to work in the gym, or possibly succeed as leader. I bet that's a fun way to make money, just assemble a superpowered team and beat everyone in that region by spamming type advantages.

That would take a while, though, and building up an overpowered team takes a lot of money. Unless you get yourself started early and concentrate on a single team of six that covers all the weaknesses in a region...

[He giggles.]

Yeah, I'm not seriously considering-- it's a little too mercenary. And ambitious. I'm trying to be a little more... I don't know. Just trying to choose Pokemon that appeal to me somehow. Not necessarily for the power.

It's better to choose Pokémon you like, yeah. I've been mostly trying to get all the Normal-types, but for the others I've been mostly catching whatever looks the more fun.

All the Normal types?

Do you want one of each, or will you be okay with, say, a Clefairy that evolves into a Clefable?

Evolution is perfectly fine. I'm not even sure we have enough space in the PC for them all. But a complete collection would look very nice in my Pokédex.

It's a pretty good goal. Ambitious enough to be challenging, but not absolutely impossible. Neither arrogant nor lazy. I'm impressed.

Why, thank you. I think it's been advancing at a good pace, but I guess that would depend on the total number of species out there.

So it sounds like it'll be time-consuming, too, if they just keep discovering more. I mean, they discover new species pretty regularly even in the real world, in the rainforests and the oceans and outer space... though they usually visit us first.

How unfair. The last time we got visited by people from outer space, they were normal humans.

[Normal humans with a hatred for Earthers and better weapons, but still.]

Ha. We have a Kryptonian and a Martian who joined an association of Earth's superheroes called the Justice League. They fly, shoot lasers out of their eyes, shapeshift, walk through walls, all kinds of stuff, and they do it to save the world.

[Granted, there's also the Thanagarians, but the public isn't entirely aware they're aliens...]

Our only Martians are the descendants of Earth colonists. No flight or eye lasers to be found there, I'm sorry to say.

[Except not, because their X-Rounders and superior technology are bad enough as it is.]

So it went badly. Did you say there were no native Martians? Or did something happen to them?

No natives at all. Considering the Mars Ray disease, it's not that surprising.

You're saying they were wiped out? Or the environment was too hostile?
