[The Pokegear snaps on, and Dick, in a nice waiter's shirt, slumps down against a wall and sighs.]

So this is, uh, ridiculously embarrassing.

[His hair's slicked back, too, and he's loosening a little bow tie with his other hand. Tugging at it with a little more force than strictly necessary.]

Exactly, um. Does anyone have any tips for how to... like, not go broke? How do people keep track of money? How do you not run out?

I plead lack of maturity, lack of understanding of the value of a... whatever the unit of currency is here, I don't even know.

And yeah, okay, if you all want a good laugh at my expense, my foster father is a billionaire, both through inheritance and being the CEO of a worldwide corporation. Go ahead, I've heard all the rich kid jokes and I don't really care, I'd just be grateful, in return, for a little--

[There's a voice yelling in the distance, something about not being paid to take breaks; Dick jumps up and shuts off the feed immediately. He does have a work ethic, okay, he was a circus performer until he was nine, but that money was all put in the bank.]

Trial and error, mostly. You figure out over time how much you need to spend on necessities, and go from there. If you want an extra boost, get a Pokémon with Pickup. They find things like balls and potions all the time, so obtaining traveling supplies will be less of a strain on you.

Well, I've got the error part down.

I like the Pickup idea. Which Pokemon have it, usually? I've still got some Pokeballs.

Zigzagoon and Aipom at the very least, who have the advantage of keeping it when they evolve. I think it also comes on some Meowths, which is great when they learn Pay Day, but they lose it the moment they evolve.

Of course you have to sacrifice evolution before you double-stack. But there is a way to stop evolving, right?

How common are Zigzagoon and Aipom? And what's their typing? Are they considered good to have on a team without their abilities?

They can choose not to, though that mostly depends on their whims. I'm not sure how common they are in general, but both are Normal-types that can be found around New Bark Town and Cherrygrove, and they've been extremely helpful during most of my Gym battles.

I'll keep my eyes out. You can't have too much help in this place, can you?

Well, I've been stuck here for seven months today. All that time spent raising mosters and traveling has to be good for something, right?

Seven months?

Geez. I'd be 3 quarters of the way through my school year by then. I mean, if I was at home.

Speaking of, how is your new teammate doing since we talked?

A lot of people would say that traveling with powerful critters is more interesting than school, though.

A bit better. He's eating normally again, at least, but he still spends most of his time looking out the window. He seems to like electrocuting the Pokémon on the beach; maybe Olivine will be good for him.

Without a doubt. It's still the most useful time increment I can wrap my head around.

Are there Pokemon in Olivine who enjoy the shock treatment? Still, that's progress.

[He remembers how much he liked beating people up at first... Couldn't stop laughing at them.]

...I'm pretty sure that one Krabby has made it its life goal to defeat him in a single duel as the sun sets over the beach. You can see the pride in its eyes. Close enough?

[He has to cover his mouth to muffle his giggles down to anything even slightly resembling decorous.]

Does that mean he gives up if he doesn't gain the upper hand until the moon starts rising? Or does he just keep at it for practice's sake?

It leaves Crimsone alone not long after that. Curfews, you know. I bet Kingler moms are scary.

All moms are scary, but Kingler pincers probably make it a little worse.

Is everyone's Pokemon team a spectacle? I've got a tomboy Riolu who refuses to understand that my Charmander dislikes dirt because of her weakness, not because it's dirty.

If that's not the case, I doubt we'll ever find out. Who would bother talking about a team without strange rivalries and stubborn tomboys?

You know, back on the money topic, someone could make a lot of money if they were willing to compensate for the spectacle. Also known as exploiting, but reality TV's never exactly been real. That should go double for in a video game...

...Do they even have reality TV here? I haven't even heard of any of those shows with clips of people getting amusingly attacked by animals.

They actually might find that boring. Getting attacked by animals? That's Tuesday for people here.

And they wouldn'T find people attacking animals funny either, so what would they show?

Pokemon celebrities going about their daily lives, probably. Or talent pageants. Pokemon Idol? Who's got the best Sing attack, the best Flamethrower...

...Can you imagine the kind of studio they'd need to film that? It would have to be everything-proof, and take measures against the crowds suing them for accidental injuries.

You know, that just raises more questions. Say you're a, I don't know, an Oddish farmer, and your neighbor has a herd of Ponyta.

I bet the Oddish would get knocked out all the time and never have a chance to get experience. Can you sue for damages as a result of developmental delay?

Maybe, if your Oddishes were there first. If you moved your Oddish farm next to a preexisting herd of Ponytas you'd probably get laughed out of court.

That is an excellent point.

And considering that gyms are "themed," type-wise, it stands to reason that type is pretty popular in that town, if you have a lot of people who want to work in the gym, or possibly succeed as leader. I bet that's a fun way to make money, just assemble a superpowered team and beat everyone in that region by spamming type advantages.

That would take a while, though, and building up an overpowered team takes a lot of money. Unless you get yourself started early and concentrate on a single team of six that covers all the weaknesses in a region...
